Clever Carvings

Here are two pumpkins that have non-traditional faces. I like the way the eyes are swirlies. Like someone who has been on the computer too much. And the grins are more engaging than the traditional toothless evils grins that I used to cut. Notice that not every face needs a nose and that a nose can be more than just a triangle. Just need a little imagination, or lacking that, a good template from a women’s magazine.

Porch Pumpkins

It’s the time of year when everyone goes to the market and picks out some pumpkins for carving into faces and putting on the porch. I bought a nice, fat, round one and I want to care it into a funny face this year. I haven’t decided exactly what it will look like. I still have a week or so before Halloween, so I have plenty of time. I’m cruising some internet crafts sites looking for ideas. When I find what I want, I’ll get to carving and take a photo to share with you.

Learning Metric

It seems that a long time there were all these proclamations that Americans needed to learn the metric system and that we were going to, at some point, use metirc for things like temperature and distance. So we all got a dose of metric in school and waited for the big changeover. But I guess it all fizzled out because I still see the same numbers for everything.

So all of a sudden an European friend of mine wlecomed a new baby into their home and they sent out a birth announcement. And the baby’s weight was noted in metric. And I didn’t have any idea how many pounds and ounces that would be.  I found a cool web site called psinvention that does a conversion for you – it took just a couple seconds to change up the kg to lb.

AIDS Walk

Today will be the AIDS walk to benefit one of the best non profits groups in town – Nashville CARES. This group provides compassionate care and assistance for people living with HIV and AIDS.

I went on the AIDS walk the very first time they had one and now I do it every year. It is always the first Saturday in October, which is a great time of year for a walk. The weather is not too hot and there is not much chance of rain. In fact, it has never rained on the AIDS Walk day yet.

We all have to be downtown by 10:00 am to register and the walk starts at noon. Come join us if you can!
